Part 2: Packing
The first step will be to break everything down one room at a time.
Sort through everything and get rid of things you haven’t touched in the last nine months. Most likely you don’t need it if you forgot you even had it.
You'll also find that you have a lot of miscellaneous items that don't belong to a particular room. Packing these items in a specific way - such as placing them in a plastic bag with a unique marking on it, (such as a star) - will help you keep track of what's miscellaneous and what isn't.
Overall you'll want to keep boxes as room-specific as possible. Even if you're moving to a small apartment and not a multi-floor home, having everything in its correct place when it's time to unpack will prevent unnecessary stress. You'll be in a new environment and won't know where you put every single thing you've packed. Staying very organized while packing will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. Know your system and stick to it.
Pack Like You're Going on Vacation
Set aside the essentials and box them separately. Place these boxes in an accessible area of the truck so you can unpack them as soon as you get to your new house/apartment.
