Part 3: Labeling and Managing Your Inventory
Traditional Sharpie Marker
An unmarked box is the worst thing that can happen when you arrive at your new destination. There are so many ways to keep track of your stuff and avoid this problem.
The most common method involves using a black marker to write room names on each box. When in doubt go back to the Stone Age and just write something on it. An unmarked box may get thrown away and you’ll be very upset at the end of the day.
Mobile Inventory Software
There are some innovative options for keeping an inventory for all of your boxes. Here are a few options for you tech people who love finding an app for everything.
IMoving attempts to take you through the entire packing, moving, and unpacking process.
You can add items to specific boxes, assign those boxes to specific rooms and ultimately email your inventory to your computer.
While the app feels rough at times and isn’t always the paragon of stability, it gets the job done pretty well. I was concerned about entering a large amount of data on a smartphone, but it wasn't as time consuming as I'd expected. You're really only typing a couple of words for each item, and it’s quicker then walking over to your laptop and typing in each item.
IMoving also allows you to add photos, which is considerably faster then using your computer because you can use your iPhone's built-in camera.
Even with its faults, IMoving was my favorite tool this time around. When you're all over the apartment and you still don't know where to find something, being able to look it up on your phone is an enormous help.
If you prefer to handle your entire move through the web there is only one place to go and that’s UNPAKT. These guys have revolutionized the industry and the way we plan for a move.
Be sure to check back next Monday for the finale of this four-part series, Part 4: Moving In.
