In terms of pure mass, Hurricane Sandy is a record-setter.
At one point, Hurricane Sandy surpassed all previous storms to become the largest in Atlantic basin history, according to this Wall Street Journal article. The diameter of gale force winds spanned over 1,000 miles.
On the other hand, Hurricane Irene, which hit a few months ago, was over twice the size of an average hurricane. When comparing Sandy to Irene (pictured), then, it's easy to see why Sandy was unlike anything we've ever seen.
