10 Ways to Overcome Procrastination

Procrastination is often a great source of stress. You may procrastinate because you feel overwhelmed with a situation and doubt you can handle a task. Ignoring vital tasks is a bad habit that deteriorates your self-esteem, physical health and personal success.

You can change this pattern, right now.

1. Just Get Started – Set a timer for 5, 10, or 15 minutes and begin. Give yourself permission to work within that time limit with no expectations.

2. Make The Task Fun – Make a monotonous task pleasant by creating a lively mood. For instance, turn on some music, wear colorful clothing, open the windows and let the sunshine in. You can even find a partner to be your clean-up buddy and make it a hang out.

3. Review Your Goals – Review your goals, are they immediately helpful to you if completed? Prioritize these goals and choose one to work on first. (i.e. clean my room, organize my desk).

4. Do One Task At A Time – Break down overwhelming tasks into small steps. Work on them one at a time. (i.e. from “clean the house” to “identify specific clutter zones”).

5. Create Deadlines – If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would ever get done. Create deadlines by writing goals and tasks in your calendar or planner.

6. Remember the Premack Principle – Motivate yourself by making good behavior your reward. For example, only surf the Internet, watch TV or take that coffee break after you finished a load of laundry or returned your calls and e-mails.

7. Recognize Acknowledgement – Acknowledge your accomplishments each day – big and small. Recognizing your progress can be a great reward in itself and a way to boost self-confidence.

8. Use Positive Imagery – Imagine how you’ll feel after accomplishing tasks and walking into a clean orderly home.

9. Review - Review your reason for eliminating procrastination. Remind yourself of why procrastination is harmful and why you don’t want to repeat old patterns.

10. Get Support – Share your goals and progress with a colleague, coach, friend, relative or other trusted individual.

Remember: Make your goals small and concrete not big and vague. Write out your tasks, prioritize them and begin. Once one domino falls, momentum builds up and the other dominoes fall with no additional energy expended. One small action can start movement that builds momentum on its own.
