Tips for Moving in the Winter Months
While many people tend to prefer moving during the warmer months, sometimes that simply isn’t possible for others. However, just because the weather outside isn’t sunny and 75℉, that doesn’t mean moving during winter has to be a nightmare. In fact, since fewer people tend to move during this time, you often have bigger windows of availability to choose from when coordinating with your moving company!
If you do happen to be moving during the winter months, here are a few tips to help things go smoothly.
Keep in Touch with Your Movers and Watch the Weather
Especially if you live in or are moving to an area where winters can bring pretty rough weather, keep in touch with your movers and regularly check in with them. If it looks like bad weather is on the horizon, consider (if you are able) rescheduling your move to a few days earlier or later to avoid any issues with Mother Nature.
Clear Your Pathways
Your movers are going to have a much harder time transporting your belongings to and from the truck if they have to wade through several inches of snow and balance on (literal) thin ice. Before your movers arrive, clear your driveways and walkways to ensure they can get in and out of your home with ease.
Take Measures to Keep Things Clean
Whether it be rain falling or salt on the ground, a lot of gunk can easily get pulled into your home as everyone moves around. Lay down drop cloths and have towels to quickly wipe up any messes that may occur in the doorways.
Watch Your Heat
Since your doors will be open for your movers, if you keep your heat on, you’ll be wasting a lot of energy. Consider lowering your thermostat by several degrees so the heat won’t kick on. If you’re able to, you should also try to head to your new home early and turn the heat on some you don’t walk into an ice-cold space.
