How to Move Out Fast
Sometimes, you need to move out in a hurry. Maybe move-out day snuck up on you--a particular challenge if, for example, you're finishing up at one job while trying to transition to a new one, or dealing with kids' activities and classes while juggling the challenges associated with your move. You might have suddenly gotten your dream job offer, but discovered that in order to take it, you're going to have to make a fast move to a new city. You might simply have decided that you've had enough of your current roommate situation and ended up with a better offer.
Now what?
Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to make it easier to move out fast.
1. Start with a solid plan in place.
Take a minute, before you dive in and start throwing things into boxes, to plan. Put together a fast list that covers the biggest details of your move.
Where are you moving to? Do you have adequate room for all of your stuff on the other end--and a place to put it immediately--or do you need to arrange for storage for a period of time?
Will you need movers to help with your move? (Hint: College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving can provide help with your moving tasks--and we can handle fast moves, too!)
What arrangements do you need to make in order to move? Do you need paperwork and records? What utilities or services will you need to turn off? Do you need to change the address on any automatic deliveries? What about school for the kids: do you need to transfer records?
Taking the time to put together a list of those critical elements of your move can make it easier when the time comes to actually handle those critical logistics.
2. Plan to have help wherever you can.
When you need to move fast, you shouldn't try to do it on your own. The DIY route could leave you feeling more stressed than before. Instead, call in friends and family members. Arrange to have professional movers help with the packing and heavy lifting. The more help you have, the easier the move will flow.
3. Get rid of items you don't need as you pack.
Remember, every item you pack is one that you have to do something with when you reach your new home. As you pack, keep garbage bags or an extra box on hand. Keep a stack of items you plan to donate and items you plan to throw away. Simply having that option at your fingertips can make it easier to deal with the mess--and prevent you from having quite so much mess to deal with on the other end. Be practical and get rid of items you no longer want or need, or items that you won't need in your new home. You'll find it much easier to organize when you get there!
4. Make a list of the essentials.
Plan out a "moving essentials" bag or box that will have the items that you need for the first few days. As you come to those items, including clothing, basic toiletries, or essential kitchen items (the coffee maker, anyone?) set them aside.
5. Pack as you come to items.
Normally, when you're planning for a move, you may want to use an organized packing method and schedule. When you're packing fast, however, you may find it easier to just pack now and sort later. Use soft items--clothing, blankets, sheets--to wrap breakables or pad boxes. Put things where they fit, even if that means that you don't have neatly organized boxes. When you're packing in a hurry, those minutes can count!
