13 May How to Prepare for a Move
In honor of National Moving Month, College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving has prepared a series of blog posts for you to reference for your next move.
How to Prepare for a Move – Moving Checklist
Research different moving companies. Important things to check: reviews, quality, and overall standards of the company. Most companies should offer a free, no obligation quote – use this to your advantage. Remember, they will be moving all of your important and personal items, so make sure that they are fully licensed and insured. (Good thing for you, College Hunks is both.)
Think about how you want the packing experience. Do you want to pack everything yourself? Or do you want professional movers to pack your items? Maybe you want a mixture of the two. Think about what supplies you will need for packing (boxes, newspaper, bubble wrap, tape, etc.). If you are using a company to pack, check to see what materials they can provide.
Schedule utility transfers. Once you know your move date, call up your service providers to shut off or transfer your utilities. Calling in advanced will help ensure that you can get your utilities shut off on the correct day. Also, schedule the utilities in your new home to be turned on the day before you move in.
Measure your furniture and make a plan for your new home. If you have an idea in your head of where everything needs to be, it will help expedite the moving process.
Don’t forget to label your boxes. Title each box with its designated room so that your movers will know where to place the boxes. If there is important items in a box that you’ll soon be looking for, list those on the label as well. This will reduce time searching through every box. Helpful tip: label boxes with light, medium, or heavy to indicate the weight of the box. If something needs to be upright, draw an arrow on it to indicate this.
