Is The Moving Business Moving?
YES–the moving industry is moving and in significant ways. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 56% of Americans said in 2021 that they planned on moving, which is up an incredible 26% from 2020, when only 30% were planning to move. In 2020, one in five Americans said they either moved or know someone who moved during the pandemic. Reasons for people relocating range from concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak and college dorms closing to people exiting communities they felt were unsafe and leaving housing they could no longer afford.
About 37% of 2020 movers couldn’t afford their housing due to pandemic job or income loss and nearly half of Americans are now thinking about moving to reduce living expenses.
The ability to work remotely is also driving many movers’ decisions to relocate to more affordable rural and suburban areas outside of large cities as they also desire more outdoor space. More movers are choosing states like New Mexico, Idaho, and Maine for these reasons. Florida and Texas are also popular destinations for many leaving California, Illinois, and New York.
Young adults (ages 18 to 29) lead the demographic most likely to have moved in 2020, had someone move into their home, or know someone who moved because of COVID-19, according to the survey. By race and ethnicity, 28% of Hispanics have had one of these experiences, compared with 20% of white adults, 19% of Black adults, and 24% of Asian Americans.
What do all these moving trends mean for entrepreneurs? It’s time to jump on the profit bandwagon as a franchisee of College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving.
As the leading stress-free junk removal and moving franchise in the country, we are thankful to say 2020 was a successful year for our brand despite the many challenges faced along the way. We were forced to pivot quickly to implement new best practices to limit the spread of the virus while still being there to provide necessary services for our customers–curbside junk removal, express curbside junk removal, no contact quotes, no contact payments for services, etc. As a brand, we were able to show an increase in revenue, jobs, efficiency, number of franchisees, and our ongoing community outreach programs.
